For 13 years, I ran a mid-sized alarm company servicing over 5000 accounts in the San Francisco Bay Area. One of my continuing goals was to leverage technology to deliver a better product to our customers and provide a competitive advantage. This was in the early days of business computing when we had an AppleTalk network for sales, a Novell network for accounting, and a Unix-based system for our alarm Central Station. On multiple occasions, I hired consultants and vendors to help integrate the three systems with mixed results. I wished there was a single company I could rely on.
This was in the early days of the Internet and based on the premise of one company providing a complete set of integration services, I decided it was time to try a new business.
My assumption was that there were many companies with a similar vision regarding computing who just needed help putting it all together. As is often the case, I grossly underestimated what it would take to become proficient in my new field. But, I also had a tremendous amount of fun in the process.
In the security business, we found that we could provide a better level of service when we were able to offer a comprehensive solution. We have used the same concept at Lanlogic by providing not only the on-site support and IT help desk services, but also the critical back-end hosted services for web, email, and more. Over time, we have added additional services as the needs arose, such as network security assessments, as well as disaster recovery and business continuity planning .
